Perhaps a little known fact about me: I am obsessed with the movie The Rock. When it came out, my brother and I watched it whenever it was on television, and I’m pretty sure at some point we got it on VHS and watched it over and over again. Ever since I saw The Rock, I have wanted to go to the REAL Alcatraz. We actually planned this San Francisco trip around Alcatraz because I told Mike if we couldn’t get tickets, we’d plan our trip over a different weekend. Luckily, we got tickets and we were on the first boat to the island!
I had REALLY high expectations. So high that I was actually worried I would be disappointed right out of the gate because I just wanted it to be exactly how I imagined it. I’m happy to say that even with my sky high expectations, our visit to Alcatraz somehow managed to EXCEED them. I was blown away. The audio tour was incredible and was extremely informative and interactive. If you ever have the opportunity to go, do it. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
From a photography standpoint, I was happy with my pictures – we were on the first boat over in the morning so we had that really nice soft light. The high contrast of the interior led to some (in my opinion) great black and white shots!
